These customized, extra clearance rod bearings start out as ACL’s Race Series tri-metal 1580H and 1580HX bearing sets which we send out in large lots to be WPC surface treated for anti-wear.  After the bearings are treated we then precisely measure each shell’s thickness and sort them into lots to be packaged together into perfectly matched sets.  Each set contains top shells (H) and lower shells (HX) which have been processed by Mporium for worry free fitment.  Each set targets .0024″ nominal oil clearance for the S65/S85 engine. (NOTE: visible lines caused by measuring with the Mitutoyo indicator are normal and do not affect the bearing’s function or longevity).

We have been installing these custom sets at our shop in Texas for many years and are now offering them retail as an economical upgrade option to off-the-shelf bearings for worldwide V8 and V10 owners. Thousands of these sets are in use worldwide. Our shop alone has installed these into hundreds of S65 and S85 engines over the years with 100% success.

Why make such a custom set? ACL’s 1580H bearings provide clearances similar to the OE spec, yet their 1580HX “increased clearance” set may increase oil clearance too much.  Therefore, it has been common practice to buy a set of both and “mix” them together and assume the clearance will be closer to the .0024″ ideal clearance for a typical S65/S85 crankshaft journal.   The danger of blindly mixing ACL’s pre-packaged lots of H ad HX shells is not knowing the dimensions of each bearing from set to set which can lead to wildly varying and potentially harmful oil clearances. ACL matches each set according to their measurements. Due to manufacturing tolerances and deviations, some upper/lower shells in each set measure quite a bit thinner or thicker than the next set.  So, while each boxed SET from ACL results in a consistent final bore diameter, splitting up the shells from each set to package with others is dangerous without knowing their actual dimensions.

We take the guesswork out of the process by measuring each bearing shell into matched sets for ideal clearances, and each set also has the added benefit of being WPC treated for anti-wear!

Each set is packaged in foam for protection in shipping. Each set is identified as “Upper” and “Lower” for correct installation. S65 sets come with 16 total shells, V10 sets come with 20 total shells. We also stock BE’s custom ARP rod bolts which are also highly recommended with these bearing sets.

What is WPC treatment? 

WPC (Wide Peening Cleaning) is a treatment of the friction surface, it is NOT a coating on top of the part. The best visualization is to imagine (under a microscope) a smooth ping pong ball that undergoes surface treatment to make its surface dimpled like a golf ball for additional oil retention “pockets” and reduced surface friction.
