These VANOS cover cups are an Mporium exclusive, used in house since 2017 as our answer to the failure-prone plastic covers provided by BMW in their S65 engine. Now available to the public!  Each order includes four cups, enough for one S65 engine.

The function of the plastic covers and these cups are to cover the coiled VANOS return spring and prevent the spring from walking forward and off of their outer retaining pins, potentially resulting in catastrophic damage inside the engine.  Failed plastic covers find their way into the oil sump, often being ground up between the timing chains and engine up in the oil sump.  Debris in the oil sump results in oil starvation leading to premature rod or main bearing damage and ultimately, engine failure.

More elegant than flat washers, our design surrounds the spring coil for a streamlined assembly. These cups replace the captured washer underneath each VANOS central bolt (4 per engine), which results in a fully captured and permanent solution. Unlike various ‘clip-on’ solutions which can loosen over time or come off, these are the only way to ensure a truly fail-safe and life-long assembly. Since the central bolts must be released to install these cups, re-timing the engine is mandatory, therefore recommended for professionals or the experienced DIY’er familiar with the S65 cam timing system. We recommend the official BMW timing procedure as shown in the TIS database. Each purchase includes a printed copy of these instructions for cam timing and checking timing.
