Rod Bearing Issues
BMW has long suffered a reputation among die hard enthusiasts for engine bearing premature wear and failure in their Motorsports line of M3 and M5 engines (S54, S62, S65, S85). Engine builders and bearing experts have agreed that BMW has built these engines with a bearing oil clearance less than the performance engine industry recommends, which is compounded by another issue known as “tolerance stacking” which can potentially reduce the effective bearing clearance to well below acceptable dimensions.
As a result, we see these engines wearing through their bearings prematurely. If the tolerance stack was unfavorable we’ve seen catastrophic engine failures at mileages as low as 13,000 miles. This is why we feel as though it’s not as much an issue of maintenance history as it is an assembly issue from the factory, and is why we recommend the service to be performed as a preventative measure for all S54, S62, S65, and S85 engines.
Oil analyses are sometimes helpful in catching premature wear in some engines before a catastrophic failure occurs, but there is really no way to identify imminent danger without disassembly and inspection. We have had customers come to us for engine replacements recently after a “clean” oil analysis. In our experience maintenance history, usage style, or even how your engine sounds are not likely indicators of their condition. For these reasons, we have developed a special “Signature Service” package to economically remedy the concern.
The Solution
Ever since the early 2000’s when BMW enthusiasts started to observe M3 engines failing at an alarming rate, several companies have since engineered replacement bearing sets that increase the oil clearance to reduce failures.

BE has made their research available for evaluation, allowing consumers and engine builders alike to be educated on the issue and remedy. We believe BE to be the best solution because their dimensions and final bearing clearance result in the closest to what the industry believes is ideal for performance engines. For those who have researched other brands and prefer bearings from companies like VAC, ACL, Mahle, or King, even our own WPC treated extra clearance ACL bearings, we stock those too!
The bearings we recommend and install contain a copper/lead makeup allowing for logging wear trends via oil analyses. Our bearing services address the bearing shells themselves and also upgrade the rod bolts, include new engine mounts, and of course include all associated gaskets, sealings, oil and filter service, plus our exclusive laser engraved service plaque with your VIN and service mileage, a service feature not found anywhere else.

S54 rod bearing signature service
2000-2006 M3, plus Z4M and some 2001 Z3M. Starting at $2099.
For a standardized price, we offer our Signature Service for S54. As part of this service, we perform the necessary disassembly to remove the oil pan and access the rod bearings. The subframe is removed and all parts degreased and cleaned before reassembly. The oil pan and oil pickup tubes are fully cleaned in our ultrasonic cleaner. For the S54, our preferred bearings are BE, VAC, or KING. We stock all variants. During reinstallation we check for any concerns within crank journals or debris in the oil pickup from any other internal issues. We install upgraded ARP2000 connecting rod bolts to an exact torque specification to prevent distortion. The entire process is fully documented and photographed for your records.
As with all of our signature bearing services, the job includes new engine mounts, all associated gaskets, sealings, oil and filter service, plus our exclusive laser engraved service plaque with your VIN showing the service mileage. S55 rod bearing service
2014-2022 M2c M3, M4 Twin Turbo Engines. Starting at $2999.
For a standardized price, we offer our Signature Service for the S55. As part of this service, we perform the necessary disassembly for subframe removal to disassemble the oil pan internals and access the rod bearings. The removed components are cleaned and degreased before reassembly with a focus on restorative detail. The oil pan and oil pickup tubes are fully cleaned in our ultrasonic cleaner. The oil pump is removed and inspected. For the S55, our preferred bearings are from KING or ACL. During reinstallation we check for any concerns within crank journals or debris in the oil pickup from any other internal issues. Most hardware in the S55 sump is one-time use, so we install all new hardware where required including new OEM connecting rod bolts to an exact multi-phase torque specification to prevent distortion. New oil pan gaskets are installed to restore a leak-tight sump. The entire process is fully documented and photographed for your records.
As with all of our signature bearing services the job includes new engine mounts, all associated gaskets, sealings, oil and filter service, plus our exclusive laser engraved service plaque with your VIN showing the service mileage. It is also an excellent time to take advantage of labor overlap for installation of upgraded turbo downpipes. Afterwards, the vehicle is fully road tested and quality checked before releasing.
S62 v8 signature service
The 2000-2003 M5 and Z8, 5 liter V8. Starting at $3499.
For a standardized price, we offer our Signature Service for S62. As part of this service, we perform this disassembly to remove the lower and upper oil pan to access the rod bearings. The subframe is removed and all parts degreased and cleaned before reassembly. The oil pan and oil pickup tubes are fully cleaned in our ultrasonic cleaner. For this engine custom bearings from VAC or ACL are installed with an anti-friction Calico coating. We also stock WPC treated OEM bearings. During reinstallation we check for any concerns within crank journals or debris in the oil pickup from any other internal issues. We install upgraded ARP2000 connecting rod bolts to an exact torque specification to prevent distortion. The entire process is fully documented and photographed for your records. This job has potential for discounted replacement of power steering components and hoses plus other options. We recommend an evaluation of your vehicle to establish a customized job order. Due to the deteriorating condition of these 25 year old cars and the significant number of components disturbed to facilitate the job, there is potential for additional recommendations “while you’re in there”.

S65 V8 rod bearing signature service
2008-2013 M3 S65 V8 engines. Starting at $2899.
This is our most requested rod bearing service! For those who have researched other brands and prefer bearings from companies like BE, VAC, ACL, Mahle, or King, we stock those too!
During this service, we perform the necessary disassembly to remove the oil pan and access the rod bearings. The subframe is removed and all parts degreased and cleaned before reassembly. The oil pan and oil pickup tubes are fully cleaned in our ultrasonic cleaner. For the S65, our starting price includes our own custom-measured extra-clearance ACL bearings which are WPC treated for anti-wear. During reinstallation we check for any concerns within crank journals or debris in the oil pickup from any other internal issues like Vanos spring cover deterioration. We install upgraded BE-spec ARP connecting rod bolts to an exact torque specification to prevent connecting rod distortion. The entire process is fully documented and photographed for your records. S85 v10 rod bearing signature service
2006-2011 M5 and M6 engines are one of the most beloved and exotic BMW engines to date and deserve this service to keep as many on the road as possible. Starting at $4999.
For a standardized package price, we offer our Signature Service for this V10. One of the more complex bearing jobs with numerous parts invoiced for this job, we address not only the bearings but other known problem areas like the piston oilers and Vanos high pressure oil pipe and chain rails. We perform the necessary disassembly to remove the oil pan and access the rod bearings and Vanos oil pumps. The entire subframe is removed and all parts degreased and cleaned before reassembly. External oil pumps are cleaned and resealed, power steering pipes inspected, and block flanges checked for leaks. The oil pan and oil pickup tubes are fully cleaned in our ultrasonic cleaner. For the S85, our preferred bearings are our WPC treated ACL or BE. We stock VAC and KING as well. During reinstallation we check for any concerns within crank journals or debris in the oil pickups, and set the gear lash at the Vanos high pressure pump. (We can also disassemble and rebuild this Vanos oil pump). We install upgraded BE-spec ARP connecting rod bolts to an exact torque specification to prevent distortion. The entire process is fully documented and photographed for your records.

As a package offered at an appealing starting price, we offer our Signature Service for this V8 Twin Turbo. One of the most complex bearing jobs with numerous parts invoiced for this job, we address not only the bearings themselves but other known problem areas like the oil pan gasket and sensor leaks, oil pump, and oil pump chain. The entire chassis subframe is removed and all parts degreased and cleaned before reassembly. The oil pan and oil pickup tubes are fully cleaned in our ultrasonic cleaner. For the S63, our preferred bearings are made by KING. During reinstallation we check for any concerns within crank journals or debris in the oil pickups, and set the oil pump chain deflection with BMW tooling. (We can also disassemble and rebuild this oil pump). We install new OEM connecting rod bolts to an exact multi-phase torque specification to prevent distortion. The entire process is fully documented and photographed for your records.
